Macdermid Alpha

Macdermid Alpha Labs, located at KIADB, Devanahalli, Bangalore, is an 80,000 sq.Ft. industrial facility comprising advanced laboratory spaces and a corporate office, configured across G+1 floors. The project was envisioned as a contemporary research environment that supports collaboration, innovation, and creativity, while retaining the robustness and efficiency essential to an industrial setup.

The fundamental design question was how to seamlessly integrate the rugged functionality of an industrial building with the sophistication and comfort of a corporate workplace. The design response achieves this balance by carefully aligning performance with identity, scale with detail, and operational efficiency with user experience. The result is a workspace that not only supports complex research and operational needs but also reflects the client’s forward-looking vision for growth.

Maximum efficiency and simplicity form the core design philosophy. The building mass is strategically shaped to allow for a large landscaped court at the front of the site, preserving flexibility for future Phase 2 development. An L-shaped configuration with a centrally accessed entry lobby and drop-off creates a strong sense of arrival, enhanced by green plantations flanking the approach. Open Space Reservation (OSR) areas are evenly distributed across the site, creating green pockets at both the front and rear, contributing to visual relief and environmental quality.

Climate responsiveness plays a crucial role in the architectural expression. The building envelope is designed to minimize heat gain while ensuring adequate daylight and outward views. Effective overhangs, recessed window openings, and controlled façade exposure reduce direct solar incidence and improve thermal comfort within the building.

The façade articulation combines functional window openings, double-skin façades with louvers, recessed glazing, and masonry walls finished with high-quality exterior paints. Together, these elements create a contemporary, high-performance building skin that seamlessly blends industrial efficiency with refined corporate character, delivering a facility that is both functional and expressive.
